Trumpington Secondary school is part of a major housing development in the south of Cambridge. As well as providing new secondary school places, the school will provide a range of community sports facilities for the habitats of the new 4000 houses.
The building was designed to have a BREEAM Excellent rating by the client The Cambridge Education Foundation in partnership with Morgan Sindall the main contractor and the M&E contractor, T Clarke. The photo-voltaic requirement was to generate an annual output of 59,000 kWh in order to offset 20% of the building energy consumption.
In spite of the large roof area, the roof space available for installing PV panels was restricted by roof lights, vents and other plant and access systems. Ablaze Green Energy Solutions worked in collaboration with contractors and architect to design a system which fits within the constraints of the roof whilst generating the required 59,000 kWh for the school to achieve its BREEAM rating.
The system comprises of 298 panels mounted on a non-penetrative self-ballasted system on the 2 main roofs of the building with inverters also installed on the roof excluding the DC from inside the building. T Clarke, the electrical contractor brought the AC cables from the LV panel on the ground floor to each roof.
